Getting Lost Efficiently

چکیده
We consider the mixing time of random walks on a graph G, using the eigenvalue gap to measure the mixing time. We attempt to bound the mixing time in terms of the diameter Diam of G. We show that, for the standard random walk, there exists a family of graphs with diameter 3 but mixing time Ω(n), and a family of trees with diameter 3 but mixing time Ω(n). The main result is a scheme for re-weighting the edges of any graph so that the mixing time becomes O(Diam).

Supporting people with dementia to walkabout safely outdoors: development of a structured model of assessment.
People with dementia while missing are at risk of harm including death. Yet, welfare concerns arise when freedom to walkabout outdoors is restricted and in particular, getting lost is a risk factor for admission to long-term care. Accurate methods of assessing the risks posed to community-dwelling people with dementia from getting lost are needed to ensure intervention is proportionate. Current...

متن کاملReconversion of Flat Buildings Administration: New Romanian Business Opportunities
In Romania, after the changes in 1989, most flats in existing buildings were sold to the occupants. This was a sort of “getting back” for those people who lost their private property, but another reason of this decision was the missing centralized management capacity of the administration. Looking back now and analyzing from the point of view of how property was redefined at that time, we can s...
متن کاملElision Based Text Zooming
Scrolling through text documents is a cumbersome and ineffective means of getting context and overview. I present a superior technique that augments scrolling by using elision to simulate zooming. This allows smooth, rapid transitions between overview and detail and effectively supports the task of recovering lost context when reading or navigating through a document. I describe an implementati...
متن کاملDisorientation in Minimal Access Surgery: a Case Study
Navigating through minimal access surgical environments such as the human colon can be difficult, even for expert gastroenterologists. “Getting lost” is a common experience for endoscopists, especially within the tortuous sigmoid colon where salient landmarks are not generally available. This paper presents the concept of “getting lost” in endoscoppy as a loss of both global and local spatial o...
